Do you ever wonder why some spaces just feel right? The secret often lies in where you place your art. The right art placement can take your room from “okay” to unforgettable. This guide shows exactly how to hang your art so it brings the best out of every space, from your cozy living room to overlooked areas like hallways and bathrooms.

Quick Placement Tips:

  • Living Room: 6–8" above sofas, mantels for impact
  • Bedroom: Calm art above the bed or facing it for peaceful mornings
  • Entryways & Hallways: Vertical pieces or mini galleries for a welcoming feel

Living Room: Make It the Star

The living room is often the busiest, most welcoming space in your home. It’s a natural place to showcase art that ties everything together.

  • Above the Sofa: The wall above your sofa is prime real estate for art. A large piece or a gallery wall here immediately grabs attention. To avoid it looking like you eyeballed the placement, hang it so the bottom sits 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) above the sofa.
  • On the Mantel: Fireplaces already draw the eye, so why not double the impact with artwork? A striking piece or layered smaller works can shine here. Just don’t let the art be wider than the mantel. It’ll feel like it’s spilling over, and not in a good way.

Bedroom: Keep It Peaceful

The bedroom is all about relaxation, so let your art reflect that. Think soothing colors and serene subjects.

  • Above the Bed: A wide horizontal piece or a pair of smaller prints works beautifully above the headboard. Hang them about 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) above the bed so it feels like they belong, not like they’re floating awkwardly.
  • Across from the Bed: Picture waking up and seeing something calming. Maybe a soft landscape or an abstract piece that feels peaceful. It’s a much better way to start your day than staring at a blank wall.

Dining Room: Set the Mood

Art in the dining room can make the space feel warm and inviting (and might even make dinner taste better, who knows?).

  • Above the Table: A single large piece or a row of smaller prints above the dining table creates an instant focal point. Leave 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) between the bottom of the art and the tabletop so it doesn’t look cramped.
  • On Nearby Walls: Don’t stop at the main wall. Art on side walls can bring the whole room together. Just pick pieces that flow with your table and decor so everything feels intentional.

Hallways: Showcase Your Collection

Hallways may be narrow, but they have so much potential. Use them as a mini gallery to show off pieces you love but aren’t sure where to put.

  • Gallery Wall: Small or medium pieces lined up along a hallway can create a striking display. Keep the spacing even (around 2-3 inches or 5-8 cm) and hang them at eye level, roughly 5 feet (1.5 meters) from the floor, so they’re easy to admire as you pass by.
  • Play with Height: High ceilings? Lucky you. Vertical art can emphasize the height and make the space feel dramatic in the best way.

Bathroom: Small but Stylish

Yes, even your bathroom deserves a little love. The right art can make it feel polished, maybe even spa-like.

  • Above the Towels: That blank space above your towel rack is begging for a small or medium print. Water scenes or botanical art fit perfectly with a bathroom’s calming vibe.
  • Near the Mirror: A small piece next to the mirror can add charm without overwhelming the space. Just make sure to use a moisture-resistant frame. Nobody wants to ruin their art with steamy showers.

Kitchen: Add a Personal Touch

The kitchen is a place where small, playful touches can really shine.

  • Above Counters: Blank walls above your countertops are perfect for one or two small prints. Herb illustrations or nature-inspired designs are a nice touch, adding just the right amount of freshness.
  • On Open Shelves: If you have open shelves, prop up a framed print alongside cookbooks or ceramics. It adds personality without taking up counter space, which is always a win.

Entryway: Create a Warm Welcome

Your entryway is the first thing people see when they walk in, so make it count. Art here should feel like a friendly hello.

  • Above a Console Table: A medium-sized piece hung 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) above a table creates an eye-catching focal point. It’s the perfect way to set the tone for your home.
  • Fill Nooks: Smaller nooks or corners can come alive with vertical pieces. Pick something bright or cheerful. It’ll make your home feel welcoming before anyone even steps inside.
